Johnny Depp’s lawyers discuss Amber Heard’s drug use

Amber Heard was questioned by Johnny Depp’s lawyers on her fourth day of giving evidence in the defamation trial between the former couple.

Depp accused Heard of defaming him in a 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post.

In the article, which was published about two years after their divorce, Heard described herself as a “public figure representing domestic violence.”

Although Depp was not named in the article, he claims it cost him lucrative acting roles.

Heard filed a counterclaim for $142 million (US$100 million).

After testifying that Depp’s drug and alcohol use would turn him into a “monster” who would be violent with her, a lawyer for Depp ostensibly questioned Heard about his own drug use, including planning time for the “drugs” at the couple’s wedding in 2015.

“Who was the real monster in this relationship, Mrs. Heard? asked Depp’s lawyer Camille Vasquez today.

“He’s half of Johnny. It’s not all of Johnny. The other half of him is wonderful and beautiful and the man I loved,” Heard said.

On the witness stand, Heard described his former relationship with Depp as both violent and romantic, stating that his alleged abuse towards her was correlated to his drug and alcohol use.

“It was always the man who did drugs and beat me. Yeah, it was always the monster,” Heard testified.

Depp has previously testified that he had never “hit a woman” in his life.

Vasquez highlighted Heard’s own drug use, introducing a typed schedule for Depp and Heard’s wedding celebration on the actor’s private island in the Bahamas, which included time for “dancing, drugs and music” after a rehearsal dinner.

“So you were planning on doing drugs at your wedding to someone you call a drug addict?” Vasquez said.

“To be fair, we were going to have separate parts,” Heard said. “This is clearly a draft that was sent out before many changes were made.”

Messages between Heard and Depp

Vasquez also played recordings of Heard and Depp arguing, read excerpts from a Heard “love diary” filled with messages to Depp, and read texts between the former couple.

In an April 2016 journal entry, Heard wrote, “I’m sorry I could go crazy. I’m sorry I hurt you. None of this is meant to be an excuse to hurt you because the truth is that nothing is. There’s never a good enough reason to hurt you.”

Heard wrote in a March 2015 text to a doctor, “I don’t know if I will ever be able to change.”

Heard testified that she was referring to the former couple’s relationship.

“I really wanted to leave the relationship I was in. But I didn’t feel like I had the power to leave,” Heard said.

“I knew I was in a very toxic relationship with Johnny and I knew I had to change that.”

Heard was asked about her 2009 arrest related to an alleged domestic assault with a former partner, for which she was ultimately not charged.

Heard denied assaulting the woman, his former partner, at Seattle Tacoma airport in 2009, an incident that was widely reported shortly after Heard received a restraining order against Depp in 2016.

“So Mr. Depp isn’t the only domestic partner you’ve assaulted, is he, Ms. Heard?” Vasquez asked.

“I never assaulted Mr. Depp or anyone else that I had a romantic relationship with. Never,” Heard replied.

Alleged stories about the arrest were told by Depp’s public relations team at the time, calling it a “smear campaign”.

Perry Cooper, a spokesman for the Port of Seattle, confirmed to CNN that Heard was arrested at Seattle’s Tacoma airport on Sept. 14, 2009, for assault on a 4th-degree domestic violence charge, but that the prosecutor’s office declined to press charges. against Heard in the case.

Cooper said a request to have the record of Heard’s arrest expunged was granted.

CNN also submitted a request for arrest under the Freedom of Information Act, but the Port of Seattle Police Public Records Office told them they had “no records matching Amber Heard.” “.

The deadliest act of mass murder at a school in US history

CNN has reached out to the person Heard has been accused of assaulting. A spokesperson for Heard had no comment.

“The King County District Attorney’s Office has not received a full report beyond the first appearance information, but based on the initial information sent to us by the police, it does not appear that there is have evidence to prove a domestic violence offense beyond a reasonable doubt,” Casey McNerthney, spokesperson for the King County District Attorney, told CNN in a statement today.

“It doesn’t seem to be a matter of police work, but more of not having the evidence to prove a case beyond a reasonable doubt.”

During further questioning, Heard’s lawyer, Elaine Bredehoft, asked Heard if the woman she allegedly assaulted said the allegation was false.

Heard replied, “of course she did”.

With these questions, Heard ended his time on the stand.

The trial will resume testimony from additional witnesses tomorrow.
