Many of the PS4 and PS5 games that Sony is adding to its new PlayStation Plus subscription tiers were already free before.
Soon Sony will launch its revamped version PlayStation Plus subscription service in an effort to better compete with Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass and bring more subscribers into the fold. New PlayStation Plus will offer subscribers three different tiers to choose from: PS Plus Essential, which is the service as it currently exists; PS Plus Extra, which essentially combines current benefits with a host of PS4 and PS5 games to play; and PS Plus Premium, which adds hundreds of retro games from the PS1, PS2, PSP, and PS3 libraries.
Even if the PS Plus revamp date fast approaching, Sony has yet to provide a full list of all the games subscribers can expect to see from the service at launch. However, he did provide a preview, revealing some of the games subscribers to the new PS Plus subscription tiers will be able to play. There are certainly high-end games in the lineup that could very well be worth the upgrade for some PlayStation gamers, but it’s been pointed out that a lot of the games have already been free-to-play via PS Plus at one point or another.
Reddit user Schneper has compiled a list of PS4 and PS5 games that will be free with PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium which were previously free through the regular PS Plus program. It turns out that many games from Sony’s initial announcement were already free before. That means dedicated PS Plus subscribers who make sure to claim the free games each month may have less to wait for than newcomers to the service.

There are a few caveats to point out with Schneper’s initial list. For one, some games were free in one region but not in others, as was the case with Gravity Rush 2. Gravity Rush 2 was once one of the free PS Plus games in the UK, but it was not released for free in the US. Second, the list neglects resident Evilwhich was also free on PS Plus at one point.
While there’s plenty of repeat in the lineup, there should also be plenty of games that fans haven’t yet discovered, so there’s still incredible value with PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium. PS Plus Premium will potentially offer subscribers the best value for money with the inclusion of retro playstation games, of which only a handful have been confirmed so far. With these new PS Plus subscription tiers set to launch next month, fans should have a much clearer idea of what to expect sooner rather than later.
