Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s court case saw footage of a crude tirade carved into furniture and heard about the couple’s filthy home.
Johnny Depp carved strange rude messages on a kitchen worktop, the court heard in the ongoing libel lawsuit between the star and his ex-wife Amber Heard.
The testimony came from Josh Drew, the former husband of Raquel Pennington, one of Heard’s best friends.
On Wednesday Mr Drew also said Heard was ‘catatonic’ after a fight with Depp and he commented on the disgusting state of the couple’s penthouse apartment because their dogs Pistol and Boo were not house trained and urinating and defecating constantly and all over the furniture. .
Ms Pennington also gave evidence in which she said Depp said he cut his finger. How he injured his best was discussed at length during the trial, with Depp’s team insisting he lost his fingertip after Heard threw a bottle at him.
Heard is being sued by Depp for $50m (A$67m) for suggesting he abused her in 2018 Washington Post editorial. Although she hasn’t named him, he claims her claims are false and cost him lucrative movie roles. Ms Heard fought back, demanding $100m (A$134m) and claiming she had suffered “endemic violence and physical abuse” at his hands.
Quirky doodles in the kitchen
The court heard a deposition from Mr Drew which was recorded in 2019. A deposition is a formal interview recorded under oath outside the courtroom where the legal teams of both parties can gather information about the case before the start of the trial.
Mr. Drew and Ms. Pennington were Depp and Heard’s neighbors and one of their homes in Los Angeles.
He said he arrived at the stars’ home in December 2015 to find the kitchen a mess.
“The kitchen island area, things were strewn about, outside of the norm,” Drew said.
This mess included strange carvings carved into the surface of the bench.
The sculpture said “Why be an impostor? Everything is bulls**t.
Mr Drew didn’t see the bizarre incident happen but said he believed it was Depp’s work because of his ‘unique mode of calligraphy’.
He said he knew something “very, very bad had happened”.
The case saw several instances of bizarre writing on home appliances and fittings, including doodles on mirrors which Heard says were made by Depp.
Dogs defecated all over the stars’ home
Mr Drew also gave an eyebrow-raising description of the condition of the couple’s home. Which in a word was disgusting.
Heard’s attorney asked if he had seen a “poop or pee” dog in the couple’s apartment.
“In perpetuity, it was pretty much constant. I’ve cleaned my fair share in this apartment.
“(The dogs) weren’t trained at all, they stayed at home for a large part of the day and if there was no one to take care of them at any given time, there was pee and poo all over everything – sofas, couches, chairs, bed you name it”.
The focus on Pistol and Boo’s toilet habits is due to a claim by Depp that Heard and Mrs Pennington pranked him by planting feces in his bed. But Heard said one of the dogs usually defecates after ingesting some of Depp’s cannabis when he was younger.
Heard was “catatonic”
In his recorded deposition, Mr Drew also recounted an alleged fight between Heard and Depp. In May 2015, he said he heard a bottle break and then was confronted by Depp who was talking “gibberish” and was “close enough to be aggressive”.
Heard and Ms Pennington said there was a confrontation with Depp.
“Amber was like cationic, like a thousand yard stare and she was like finished. Like a ghost.”
In another pre-recorded deposition, filmed in January 2022, Ms Pennington was asked if Depp had told her if he cut his finger. “Yes,” she answered.
Musk tours in Heard
Drew also testified that Tesla billionaire Elon Musk visited Heard at his Los Angeles penthouse three or four weeks after Heard sought a temporary restraining order against Depp in 2016.
Heard and Musk dated for a while after his divorce from Depp.
Heard had alleged Depp injured his finger while traveling in Australia in May 2015 after he got angry and ripped an old phone from a wall. But Depp said the member was bloody after Heard threw a bottle at her when she was angry.
In her testimony, Ms Pennington said she saw “very, very, deep” cuts on Heard’s forearms as well as cuts on his feet after he returned from Australia. She also said that on another occasion she saw a bloody mark on Heard’s head where hair had been pulled out, a bloody lip and swelling on his nose.
“I was worried about his physical safety. I was worried that by turning around he would accidentally do something worse than he had ever planned,’ Ms Pennington said.
