A teenager who worked at McDonald’s is now enjoying a life of designer clothes, international travel and great restaurants thanks to the sale of ‘trendy’ products on eBay.

Olivia Percoco, of melbournelaunched an e-commerce eBay store in 2020 before Covid hit Australia, but said the online business “took off” in mid-2021.

The 18-year-old told Daily Mail Australia that she uses the “dropshipping” business model which involves shipping products from the manufacturer directly to the customer without the retailer ever seeing it.

She claims to have made more than $500,000 in just two years – including $50,000 in a single month – by following social media to see the most requested products.

In her spare time during Melbourne’s first Covid lockdown, Olivia taught herself ‘everything she knows’ about dropshipping by watching YouTube videos.

Before launching her online store, she worked at McDonald’s and was “completely broke”.

“I hated working (at McDonald’s), it wasn’t fun, so I Googled ways to make money online and came across dropshipping,” she said.

After noticing that others were making money fast, she felt motivated to start her own online store.

Initially, she tried the popular e-commerce platform Shopify, but was unhappy with the sales she was getting and turned to eBay.

Olivia does not limit her business to a single niche and sells products from different categories.

Some of the products it sells include coffee machines, desks, DIY supplies, gardening items, mouse pads, phone cases, and home organization products.

Last year, Olivia’s top-selling product was the reversible octopus plush toy seen all over TikTok, while this year the Starbucks coffee pod machine is the number one bestseller.

The key to making sales using the dropshipping method is to research a product’s popularity and demand, research competitors, and then decide if it’s worth adding inventory to your own store.

“A lot of time is spent researching products first — I look at what’s trending on TikTok by searching hashtags,” she said.

“On eBay I can list 40 items at a time and not limit myself to just one niche.”

Once she has chosen a product, she then finds a supplier who is usually located in Australia to reduce delivery times.

Olivia never sees the stock because it is shipped directly to the customer.

She chose eBay as her platform because it is reliable and has a large number of customers from all over the world.

Today, Olivia is able to support herself full-time while funding her luxurious lifestyle, which she brags about on TikTok.

She buys designer bags, travels business class abroad and frequents fancy restaurants.

In the future, she hopes to turn what she learned through dropshipping into another profitable branding business and eventually study marketing at university.

When asked if anyone could learn how to dropship on their own, Olivia said “absolutely”.

“It’s super easy but you have to be persistent – you’re not going to see results right away but that shouldn’t put you off if you really want to,” she said.

“You need a tunnel vision and motivation, otherwise it’s easy to lose sight of what you want to accomplish.”

“Two years ago I never imagined I could afford to stay in beautiful hotels and fly across Australia, it opened my eyes to what is possible.”

Instead, the store sells the product and passes the customer order to a third-party vendor, who then ships the order to the customer.
