Next month, Sony will expand PSMore with a new tier system: Essential (which is essentially PS Plus as it is now), Extra (which includes a library of PS4 and PS5 games) and Premium (which offers all of that, plus a larger PS1 library, PS2, PSP and PS3 games), among other benefits. the PS Plus Premium’s entire library has yet to be revealedwhile Sony recently showed off a good chunk of it, it previously said it would feature a total of 700 games at launch.
Many see PS Plus Premium as Sony’s Challenge/Competitor for Xbox Game Pass, which is often hailed as the best offering when it comes to gaming. It’s hard to compare a service that’s been around for about 5 years (like Game Pass launched in 31 markets on June 1, 2017) to one that’s yet to be released. At launch, PS Plus Premium will still be in its infancy. However, one can look at the 2017 Game Pass launch lineup and compare it quite well to the PS Plus Premium launch lineup.
Xbox Game Pass Launch Titles
When it launched in 2017, Xbox Game Pass was priced at $9.99 and offered over 100 Xbox One and backward compatible games. This price does not include Xbox Live Gold, which is now bundled into it as Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and a factor in PS Plus Premium plans and prices. Xbox Game Pass has become an absolute monster, but it should be added that its launch, although with a bunch of games, did not yet have the most popular titles.
Perhaps the strengths of The Xbox Game Pass was Halo 5NBA 2K16, Payday 2, LEGO Batman, Banjo-Kazooie, Mega Man Legacy Collection, Streets of Ragethe BioShock Games, Gears of War 1-3, Perfect Dark Zero, Borderlands, Saints Row 4, Terraria, Resident Evil 0and XCOM: Enemy Within. It wasn’t a bad lineup for 2017, but it wasn’t as mind-blowing as it is today. In fact, many probably passed it on at the time, but thanks to continued Xbox support, more Backcompat additions, day one additions, etc., it has grown from humble beginnings.
PS Plus Premium Launch Titles
Game Pass was, without a doubt, experimental at the moment, and it works to PS Plus Premium’s advantage. Sony spent years looking at this and other subscription services before launching PS Plus Premium. So its benefits are more comparable to Xbox Game Pass as it currently stands – like the ability to play online – and its price is also more comparable to Game Pass as it is (depending on tier).
Not including annual costs/discounts, PS Plus is $9.99, PS Plus Extra is $15.99, and PS Plus Premium is $17.99. It’s also impossible to compare the exact quality of the library, given that a good chunk of PS Plus games have yet to be revealed, but PS Plus has some standout games coming to the service on day one. Some highlights include Bloodborne, Demon’s Souls Remake, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawnthe Infamous games, the Spider Man Games, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Mortal Kombat 11, Red Dead Redemption 2, Siphon Filter, the Jack and Daxter Games, Borderlands: the beautiful collection, the Ratchet and Clank games, and more.
In short, if the games revealed so far are just a sampling for PS Plus Premium, subscribers are in for a treat at launch.
How 2022’s PS Plus Premium compares to 2017’s Game Pass
What is clear is that Sony is taking advantage of the time to assess the market and its rich library of games for the launch of PS Plus Premium. Its day one lineup looks a lot richer in content than Xbox Game Pass. In fact, had PS Plus Premium launched alongside Game Pass with comparable gamesmaybe that was a whole different story.
Of course, it’s not, and Game Pass’s lead is undoubtedly its biggest advantage now. PS Plus Premium in 2022 beats Game Pass 2017, but Sony isn’t competing against 2017. How he holds up over the next two years will be what proves the differences between the two services. Sony doesn’t want to commit day one games to PS Plusand that’s one area Game Pass has beaten.
Ultimately, it’s a win-win situation for all games. Both services have their benefits, and just as Game Pass has had its ups and downs, so will it. PS Plus Premium. But the idea behind both services is something fans can expect to be iterated on and innovated on for years to come.
