Obi Wan Kenobi [SPOILER] reveal changes in Star Wars history

Obi Wan Kenobi Episode 3 spoilers.

star wars loves a messed up family tree. With glowing swords and gibberish-talking puppets, it’s essentially the backbone of this beloved franchise. It should therefore not be surprising that Obi Wan Kenobi, a show rooted deep in the past, would set out to uncover a few new skeletons in the closet.

But first, episode three reminds us again of the family we lost. Specifically, a sad story of camouflage leads to Leia realizing that Ben did indeed know his birth mother, Padmé, before she died.

“Since I’ve known you, you’ve been hiding something,” she said. Which leads to the somewhat awkward question, “Are you my real father?”

Unfortunately for her, Obi Wan is not actually Leia’s father. But in saying this, Ben is kind of related to Luke, his twin brother, depending on which version of the canon you buy in.

Leia’s question evokes memories of Obi-Wan’s parents, including flashes of her mother’s shawl and her father’s hands. Now this is where things get juicy in a The Real Housewives of Tatooine sort of, because Ben then suddenly mentions a brother out of the blue, who technically shouldn’t exist based on what we know of the character’s history.

“I think I had a brother, but I don’t remember him,” Obi-Wan says before talking about the new family he’s a part of as a Jedi. This secret brother doesn’t return in the rest of the episode, but if we know star wars as we know it star warsso it seems safe to say that this throwaway comment will come back to haunt Ben before the series is over.

Who is Obi-Wan Kenobi’s brother?

Return when Return of the Jedi was first released in 1983, the original script mentioned that Owen Lars, Luke Skywalker’s adoptive uncle, was actually Ben’s biological brother. Although this reveal was ultimately cut from the final cut, the film’s novelization still includes a line where Obi-Wan refers to Owen as “his brother”:

“Your mother and I knew he would find out eventually, but we wanted to keep you both as safe as possible, for as long as possible. So I took you to live with my brother Owen, on Tatooine…”

According Reverse, the book is still available to read, in case you want to check it out for yourself. What might be harder to find is the star wars Customizable deck of cards from 1996 which also references Owen as Ben’s brother.

And then, in a 1999 novel named Jedi Apprentice: The Hidden Pastthis all came back when a younger version of Ben started daydreaming about his parents and a brother named Owen.

This changed however when 2002 attack of the clones retroactively established Owen Lars as Anakin’s half-brother after Cliegg Lars married Shmi Skywalker. 13 years later, in the short story by Abel G Peña, Lone Wolf: The Story of Obi-Wan and Luke, star wars finally tried to explain it all away by claiming that the dreams Ben had as a boy were actually a vision of the future, not the past, because, you know, Force stuff.

So yes, there is a bond there that seems brotherly, but Owen is not really Obi’s brother. But in this case, what happens here and then in Obi Wan Kenobi? Is the show trying to undo this retcon and make Owen his brother after all? It would be tricky because these episodes take place after the clone warsit was then that Kenobi realized that Owen wasn’t actually related to him, at least biologically.

However, given the convoluted history of star wars and how certain aspects of the Expanded Universe are no longer considered canon, it’s possible this show will attempt to reestablish the retcon, as tricky as that may be.

Or maybe this secret brother revelation has nothing to do with Owen Lars. Maybe Ben really has another brother we didn’t know about until now. If so, don’t be surprised if he ends up appearing at some point in this series, or at least in the very near future. And knowing star warsthis new sibling might even turn out to be someone we already know.

Whatever happens, we doubt a happy reunion is on the cards for Obi-Wan and this mysterious brother.

Boy, dark Vador wasn’t kidding when he told Obi that “Your pain has only just begun.”

The Obi Wan Kenobi The TV series will continue to air every Wednesday on Disney+.
