20 thoughts I had while watching Love during Lockup for the first time

If you want to see an unconventional love story come to life, then you’re in for a treat. Love during confinement.

The gripping series follows the real-life stories of six couples separated by incarceration as they navigate their relationships on opposite sides of prison.

Sounds simple, right? Bad. Amid the sweet, hopeful love stories lie betrayal, secrets, scandal, and everything in between. One of the show’s stars is even in a relationship with not one, but TWO inmates – and neither has a clue the other exists. Scandalous!

“I like my men tall, buff and incarcerated!” says a woman named Tai in the opening credits. Iconic words, which frankly set the tone for the rest of the show.

Meet Haley, who met the love of her life in prison. (9Now)

The first episode sparked so many thoughts — 20, to be exact — about the quirky, weird, and wonderful couples we’re introduced to. So without further ado, here is a list of all the thoughts that came to mind while watching Episode 1 of Love during confinement.

1. The first couple we meet are Haley and Dalton. Haley is incredibly giddy when she tells us, “I finally found the love of my life!” just six months after they started dating – and she won’t let anything as stupid as a few iron bars get in the way.

Dalton has served a year of an eight-year sentence, but despite being locked up, the couple phone each other non-stop, write letters to each other ‘every day for 60 days’ and call each other ‘soul mates’ . Love is love!

2. While we’re all for the romance, things get a little weird when Haley confesses that Dalton was the most popular kid at her school. “He was the one everyone wanted,” she says happily, before adding, “…He doesn’t remember me.” Now, I’m no relationship expert, but that doesn’t sound like a love story for the ages, does it?

3. We soon learn that Haley – who is a single mother – was once tragically involved in a car accident where she was the passenger of a drunk driver. She nearly died from her injuries and was awarded $80,000 as part of a settlement. I’m amazed to hear that she spent $25,000 trying to get Dalton out of jail.

4. After visiting a lawyer, Haley learns what every parent would be thinking at this point – running. “I felt that there was a very strong possibility that she would be exploited”, warns the lawyer, before saying to him: “If you were my daughter, I would ask you: ‘What are you thinking? My opinion? Lose this guy “. “Finally a voice of reason, but I seriously doubt Haley is listening.

5. Despite her words, Haley’s little face doesn’t flinch. “I believe what we have is strong enough!” she says. “I trust he will change.” On behalf of everyone watching the show, we too hope so, Haley.

6. We’ve now taken a break from Haley’s romance and caught up with Gabby and Chris, who have been in prison for five years. When we first see the couple, they seem to be in the middle of a sassy phone call and don’t care who is listening. At this point, I felt so uncomfortable that I had to leave to make a tea. Next!

7. Gabby quickly tells us that she is a woman who loves the finer things in life. “Ever since I was little, I’ve always been spoiled. I like expensive things. Anything I want, I get,” she raves, showing off her designer products. Isn’t everyone, Gabby.

8. Luckily, Chris was able to support Haley and gave her around $60,000 during their year-long romance. There is also great news: the couple is engaged! To be married! His mother is absolutely furious and I am totally invested in everything that is happening.

9. Is there anything better than a disapproving mother who shakes her head at every decision? No. And that’s exactly what we get when Gabby tries to show her around a potential wedding venue. Speaking to the camera, her mother said, “I really don’t think she’s ready to get married. I really don’t think Chris and Gabrielle will ever walk down the aisle.” This is not the most glowing review of the son-in-law…

10. It’s time for another couple! This time it’s handsome Max on the outside, who says he dedicates 30-40 minutes every morning to his skincare routine. To be fair, he shines like a fresh-born angel as he parades around his house. We need advice, immediately.

11. Max is dating Tara, who is behind bars for possession of methamphetamines. They’ve been exchanging letters for several months, and Max is pretty into it — but the problem is, he’s never seen her face on video, only in old photos.

After Max prepared to video-talk to her for the first time and even set up a ring light, Tara didn’t show up. He. Has been. Smoking. And me too ! Haven’t we seen the show Catfish? It’s red flag 101!

12. Just when you’re frustrated with this couple, another one comes along. Indie has been with Harry for eight months and he has been inside for four years. “I found a gem in a pile of rocks,” she beams, before adding that the pair have never met in person, only via video chat. Not another!

13. You might be surprised to learn that Indie and Harry are married. But not legally married, only…spiritually. They sent letters swearing to each other, “Then we are spiritually one, but not legally one.” Will there still be cake?

Indie bases her life choices on what the medium has told her, rather than advice from her family. (9Now)

14. Indie decides to base her life decisions on a trip to a psychic, who says she should move to Ohio because Harry “apparently will be released very soon”, according to her. “She was never wrong,” Indie says. Frankly, we can’t wait to see the results.

15. Perhaps the most explosive moment is when Indie tells her mother that she plans to move across the country on the psychic’s advice and is taking her four-year-old with her.

It is essential to mention that his mother is actually a bounty hunter and private detective, who has sworn to examine every detail of Harry’s life with a fine-toothed comb. She’s not a woman you want to cross paths with, and frankly this whole romance seems like the worst idea in the world. You can’t not watch!

16. When I tell you about this last couple – or should I say, couples – you won’t believe it. My jaw dropped to the floor. I still haven’t recovered. Let me explain.

Love during confinement
Tai (left) is dating Hottie (right) – but he’s not the only one she sees. (9Now)

17. We are introduced to a lovely lady called Tai, an undertaker who lives with her three children. She has been dating inmate Hottie for about seven months and is completely in love. “I would marry him today blindfolded if he asked me to,” she said. Awwwwww!

18. Suddenly the phone rings and Tai starts talking weird and pretends that noodles are burning in his house. It turns out to be her other lover, Ricky. “We met in 2016 before he went to prison,” she tells the camera, confirming that he was sentenced to 40 years. Tai confirms that she has been in a relationship with Ricky for four years. WHAT!

19. It gets worse…or better depending on how much you like the drama. These aren’t the only men she chats with — Tai says she talks to about 8-10 other men a week. “It’s kind of like Mr. Potato Head,” she says. “I can make him the perfect person. And if I feel like he’s missing, I’ll put one down and take another.” Disturbs. Soufflé.

Tai’s love story is hard to follow. (9Now)

“Even though I only date inmates, I still believe I have great taste in men. They’re still men, they just can’t leave their room,” she adds. She’s right, I guess?

20. But the icing on the cake of this whole dramatic episode comes right at the end. Tai receives a phone call from a mysterious number, and who’s on the other end? A mysterious woman, who claims she is “Hotie’s daughter”.

Tai gets so mad that she calls Hottie and merges the calls, and I swear my heart was beating so fast at this point it felt like I was running a marathon. The drama.

Scandalous. Great. Shocking. I’ve literally never seen such a rollercoaster of emotions from a show – expect the series to binge within hours.
