It was by Netflix most-watched series of all time – now squid game is officially back for the second round.
In only 27 days last year, the first season reached a huge 111 million fans according to the streaming service, beating out period drama Bridgerton.
Although we don’t know exactly when the second season of the hit Korean thriller will be released, some plot clues have falled.
Here’s what we know so far.
Wait, I forgot season 1. Remind me?
It’s a in nine parts dark drama telling the story of contestants, who are short of money for various reasons, agreeing to play childish games for a huge sum of money (45.6 billion won or $50 million)
The catch is that these games often have fatal consequences.
Seong Gi-hun is the main character: divorced with a young daughter and a big gambling problem. After winning money from a mysterious businessman in a subway game, he finds himself in the main event.
(And good warning, spoilers below).
The result? Gi-hun survives the violent games and unmasks the old man, Oh Il-namplaying alongside them as a creator, before the old man died.
But in the finale, while Gi-hun is on his way to see his daughter in the United States, he spots the same recruiter on the subway.
The mysterious businessman escapes, but not before Gi-hun retrieves the card and calls the number, asking who runs the game.
So that sets us up for season two.

What clues do we have about Season 2?
There was a bit teased by the writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk.
In a letter released by Netflix, Hwang said that Gi-hun and the black mask character The man in front will come back.
And this seller who attracts players? Hwang said, “the man in the suit with ddakji might be back.”

Hwang said, “You will also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend.”
His name is Cheol-su – and he is unlikely to be friendly.
How popular was he?
He was so popular that South Korean ISP SK Broadband sued Netflix to pay the charges increased network traffic and maintenance work, thanks to the influx of viewers.
And it easily beats costume drama Bridgerton, which was broadcast by 82 million accounts in its first 28 days.
Netflix’s first 28-day numbers include any account that watched an episode for at least two minutes.
But the series has had an undeniable impact, inspiring fakes, countless memes, costumes, and even sales of green tracksuits.
And he won a series of awards.
The series won three of the four prizes for which he was in the running Film Actors Guildmissing out on Succession for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
It was the first time actors in a non-english language series achieved these victories.
And O Young-su won a Golden Globe for his work as Oh Il-nam.
Netflix co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos said last year he was surprised by the success of Squid Game.
When will we see season 2 of Squid Game?
There’s no release date yet – and given that it took Squid Game 12 years to go from page to screen, this might not be a quick turnaround.
In an interview with Variety last year, Hwang said he doesn’t have “well-laid plans” for next season.
“If I had to do it, I definitely wouldn’t do it alone. I would consider using a writers room and I would want several experienced directors,” he said.
