Interviewer Challenges Heard on Key Points
Guthrie hasn’t been easy on Heard, calling him out on some of the trial’s biggest controversies — which she repeatedly reminded Heard she lost.
“There’s no polite way to put it – the jury looked at your testimony and didn’t believe you,” Guthrie told his guest at one point.
She also questioned Heard about her claim that she had donated all of her $7 million divorce settlement to charity – a claim later proven to be false.
“I think when you tell someone ‘I bought a house’ you’re lying? Because you didn’t pay it in full at that time. I made a promise and that promise is made over time in its nature,” Heard said — a comparison that immediately angered some viewers.
Guthrie then accused Heard of “splitting hairs” and asked if she had been caught lying.
“I don’t know, because a lot of the trial was about denigrating who I am as a human, calling me a liar,” Heard began, prompting Guthrie to chime in: “That HAS BEEN the trial. IT WAS a credibility contest.
Guthrie also confronted Heard with audio transcripts released in court, in which she admitted to starting a physical fight with Depp.
“You say you never started a physical fight, but here you are on tape saying you started a physical fight,” she told him.
Guthrie pointed out that none of Depp’s exes have claimed he abused them.
“Look what happened to me when I introduced myself, will you? Heard asked.
Heard said she would press charges against her ex-husband “until my dying day”.
Heard speaks of an intense backlash
The actress described facing a tidal wave of support for Depp – and hatred for her – as she walked to court each day.
“I passed blocks of people with signs saying things you couldn’t repeat on TV,” she said.
“I saw the courtroom filled with Captain Jack Sparrow fans from all over the world. The jury saw it all.
She said it was a traumatic experience, “bearing witness to sexual assault and violence in front of a whole room of people who expressed their contempt for me”.
Guthrie noted that in a text released during the trial, Depp vowed to decree “total worldwide humiliation” on Heard.
“I am not a good victim, I understand. I am not a sympathetic victim. I am not a saint. I don’t ask anyone to love me. But when I testified, I asked the jury to see me as a human being. He promised to ruin me – it’s like he did.
Amber challenged for her “bad behavior”
Guthrie asked Heard if she now feels she should have “admitted” more to her own “bad behavior” in the relationship which was released in court via audio tapes.
“I’m glad you asked me that question,” Heard began.
“There is an answer to these things you say. You hear my voice in these audio tapes – it’s not my voice now, it’s not who I am now. I have done and said horrible and regrettable things throughout my relationship. I behaved horribly, almost unrecognizable to myself. There are so many things I regret,” she said.
“I’ve done everything I can to stand up for myself and stand up for the truth. I look forward to living my life and I have a hopefully long one ahead of me. And I will continue to get through this. with head held high.
Guthrie also asked Heard about repeated claims by Depp’s lawyer, Camille Vasquez, in court that her emotional abuse allegations were all a performance.
“Says the lawyer for the man who convinced the world he had scissors for his fingers? And I’m the interpreter? Heard asked, referring to the Depp movie Edward Scissorhands.
“I’ve listened to weeks of testimonials about how terrible an actress I am…I’m a little confused as to how I could be both.”
Documents detail alleged abuse
In preparation for the revealing interview, Heard gave Deadlinemany documents from a doctor which she said “represented years, years of real-time explanations of what was going on”.
“There is a binder of years of notes dating back to 2011 from the very beginning of my relationship that were taken by my doctor, to whom I reported the abuse,” she explained of the documents, which were shown on screen during the special. .
The documents detail repeated instances of violence by Depp – including a 2012 altercation in which he allegedly “punched her, threw her against a wall and threatened to kill her”.
Heard’s legal team says they were unable to use the documents as evidence during the trial due to “hearsay.”
She “still loves” Johnny
In a segment of the interview that was first release earlier this weekHeard confessed that she “still absolutely loves” her ex-husband, despite his repeated claims that he abused her.
When asked if she still loved Depp, Heard replied: “Yes. Absolutely. Absolutely. I love him. I loved him with all my heart and did my best to make a relationship work deeply. broken, and I couldn’t.
“I don’t have any bad feelings or ill will towards him at all. I know it can be hard to understand or it can be very easy to understand if you’ve ever loved someone.
Heard’s challenge to Depp
Hours before the interview aired in the United States, Heard publicly challenged Johnny Depp follow his lead and do a television interview “for an hour and answer all the questions” about the allegations of abuse in their marriage.
“If Mr. Depp or his team have a problem with this, we recommend that Johnny himself sit down with Savannah Gutherie [sic] for an hour and answer any questions he has,” Heard’s spokesperson said in a statement released hours before the broadcast.
Depp has yet to publicly respond to the challenge.
